Ontario Skilled Trades – Express Entry

Ontario Skilled Trades is a stream under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) which operates as a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) under the jurisdiction of the province of Ontario. This stream is designed to issue provincial nominations to skilled tradespeople who possess an active Express Entry profile and have demonstrated Ontario work experience in a relevant skilled trade.

The eligibility criteria for the Ontario Skilled Trades stream require candidates to have an active profile in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. This stream operates on an invitation-only basis and foreign nationals cannot apply directly to the program.

All Express Entry candidates are automatically considered for the Ontario Skilled Trades stream. The province of Ontario will issue a Notification of Interest (NOI) to those candidates it has determined to be suitable for the program. Receiving an NOI from Ontario serves as an invitation to apply for provincial nomination and, if successful, for Canadian permanent residency.

Ontario Skilled Trades Application Procedure

  1. Invitation Only: This stream operates on an invitation only basis, with candidates receiving a Notification of Interest (NOI) from the province of Ontario.

  1. Express Entry Profile: Candidates must create an Express Entry profile to apply.

  1. Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must meet the minimum eligibility requirements, but meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a NOI will be issued.

  1. NOI Issuance: The province of Ontario reviews Express Entry profiles and issues an NOI to candidates of interest for provincial nomination.

  1. Application Deadline: Candidates have 45 calendar days to submit an online application through the OINP e-Filing Portal after receiving an NOI.

  1. Application Fee: The OINP application fee is $1,500 CAD.

  1. Provincial Nomination: If approved, the province of Ontario will notify the applicant of their selection for provincial nomination through their IRCC online account.

  1. Increase in CRS Score: Upon accepting the provincial nomination, the applicant’s CRS score will increase by 600 points, increasing the likelihood of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in the next Express Entry draw.

  1. Permanent Residence Application: After receiving an ITA, the applicant must submit an official application for Canadian permanent residence within the designated timeframe. Processing time is generally six months.
